Inspired by Bach : Jacques Loussier
"Intet nytt under solen", Bach er og har vært inspirasjonskilde for svært mange skapende mennesker - uavhengig av kunstform og sjanger. Albert Schweitzer mente alt fører til Bach, i forståelsen at Bach var et vendepunkt som alt pekte frem mot før, og alt i ettertid pekte tilbake til.
Loussier sin jazztrio er legendarisk, og har i to epoker med ulike besetninger improvisert over Bachs kjente verk. Han begynte å spille piano som tiåring. I timesvis spite han et preludium fra Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach - «og da skjedde det; jeg prøvde ut små endringer, rundt om temaet.»
Da han var 16 begynte han ved Conservatoire National de Musique, det nasjonale musikkonservatoriet i Paris under Yves Nat; der han også begynte å komponere.
I 1959 startet han trioen Play Bach sammen med Christian Garros og Pierre Michelot, hvor de brukte Johann Sebastian Bachs musikk som basis for jazzimprovisasjon, inkludert Goldbergvariasjonene. Trioen spilte sammen i 19 år og solgte seks millioner plater.
Etter at trioen brøt opp trakk Loussier seg tilbake til sitt hjem i Provence hvor han startet platestudio. I tillegg til at han gjorde en del egne innspillinger i studioet, jobbet han også med andre musikere, som Pink Floyd, Elton John, Sting og Yes. Store deler av Pink Floyds album The Wall skal angivelig ha blitt innspilt i Loussiers studio.
I 1985 - tre hundre år etter Johann Sebastian Bachs fødselsdag - startet Loussier igjen opp Play Bach-trioen med ny besetning; André Arpino på trommer og Vincent Charbonnier på bass.

In 1959, Jacques Loussier hit upon the idea that was to make his international reputation, by combining his interest in jazz with his love of J.S. Bach. Only a pianist with such an exceptional classical technique and deft improvisatory skill could have nurtured such a vision. He founded the Play Bach Trio, which used Bach's compositions as the basis for jazz improvisation. The trio immediately caught the public imagination. In their live appearances, tours and concerts, plus a succession of recordings built on the cornerstone of four albums made between 1960 and 1963,
Loussier's group achieved the breakthrough to popular commercial success enjoyed by only a select few jazz musicians. In fifteen years, the trio sold over six million albums! On July 28th 2004, the day of Bach's 254th anniversary of death, the Jacques Loussier Trio perform a special concert at the famous St. Thomas Church of Leipzig - the city where Bach composed many of his most famous works.
